Beginners Guide: how to use period pads correctly

Apr 17, 2024

So you've just got your first period and want to know how to use a period pad correctly. We will break down the steps here and give you all the advice you need to use a pad with confidence. Fluus pads are fully flushable, making it even easier for first time users.

How to wear a period pad?

Wearing a pad correctly is important for comfort and effectiveness. Here's a basic guide:

  1. Wash your hands: Always start by washing your hands with soap and water.

  2. Remove the pad from its packaging: Open the wrapper carefully to avoid tearing the pad.

  3. Position yourself: Either sit on the toilet, stand with one leg raised, or stand with legs apart. Find a comfortable position that allows easy access to your underwear.

  4. Remove the peel paper: Most pads have a strip of adhesive backing on the bottom and wings. Peel off the paper covering the adhesive strip, revealing the sticky surface.

  5. Place the pad in your underwear: Position the pad in the centre of your underwear, with the adhesive side down, and press firmly to secure it in place. Stick the wings under the side of your underwear and press firmly again.

  6. Adjust for comfort: Make sure the pad is positioned correctly and feels comfortable. Adjust it if needed to ensure it covers the necessary area.

  7. Dispose of the wrapper: Dispose of the wrapper and peel papers. Remember Fluus is fully flushable, so you can place both the wrapper and peel papers in the toilet and flush.

  8. Wash your hands again: Now the pads in place, you can wash your hands again, and you're done.

How often should you change your period pad?

Remember to change your pad regularly, typically every 4-6 hours, or as needed depending on your flow. It's likely that your flow will change during your period - this is completely normal!

How to dispose of pads?

Disposing of Fluus pads couldn't be easier! When you're ready to change your pad, simply remove it from your underwear, place in the toilet and flush. If you're putting on a new Fluus pad, remember you can flush to wrapper and peel papers too! Don't be alarmed if it doesn't flush first time - just wait for the toilet to re-fill and flush again.

Fluus is the only flushable pad, so if you're using another brand, ensure that you bin it and never flush it.

Can you wear period pads when swimming?

Pads are not designed to be worn while swimming. They are made of materials that absorb liquid, and when submerged in water, they would quickly become saturated and lose their effectiveness. Additionally, the adhesive backing may not hold well in water.

If you plan to swim during your period, you have a few options:

  1. Period Swimwear: Some companies make swimsuits specifically designed for use during your period. These swimsuits have built-in absorbent lining similar to pads or menstrual underwear, allowing you to swim with protection.

  2. Menstrual Cups: Menstrual cups are reusable silicone cups that collect menstrual blood rather than absorbing it. They can be worn while swimming without any issues. Just make sure to empty and clean the cup before and after swimming.

  3. Tampons: Tampons are another option for swimming during your period. They are inserted into the vagina to absorb menstrual blood and can be worn while swimming. Make sure to choose the right absorbency level for your flow and change the tampon as needed to prevent leaks.

Do period pads have an expiry date?

Fluus pads are made from plant fibres and are completely mircoplastic free. Instead of using hot-melt plastic glue, Fluus pads use a naturally-derived adhesive made from tree sap! Due to the natural materials in a Fluus pad, we recommend using your pads within 3 months to maintain optimal stickiness.
